Perspectives | Girl in a Country Song

I couldn't think of a clever title for this particular piece of writing but it most resembles the columns I used to write for Wahid's Words, so I've just come up with a title that will hopefully be a recurring style of writing on this blog. Anyways, this  song titled "Girl in a Country Song" was released last year as the debut single for country duo group Maddie and Tae. I for one, am surprised that yesterday was the first day I actually heard this, and I can say, in two listens, I've become absolutely obsessed. In the song, the girls basically point out, one by one, every trope that girls in country music are expected to fall under, and what is wrong with each of them. I'm not going to review the song because I feel like ya'll should just listen to the song anyways because it's very accessible. Instead, I'm going to talk about the social implications of this. The "country girl" image has changed considerably since the rise of...

Dedications | A Family Affair

4 years ago I started writing for The Pitch. The next years spent in that room can be characterized by stress, frustration and anxiety. Month after month, we somehow managed to race down to the very last minute- and sometimes past- to put out the paper.  It was tough, probably tougher than every other responsibility in high school combined. The relationships in that classroom are very fragile; in that place, any small thing can set anyone off. Editors-in-chiefs, Section Editors, Assistant Editors, Staff Writers- everyone is prone to being affected by the high strung nature of the job. As the paper existed as a whole, every small mistake affects every other member of the staff, regardless of what section they write for. Fights are commonplace. Every article, every info-graph has to go through many pairs of eyes- the last pair belonging to the well-dressed, eloquently spoken Ms. Ellen. Always looking through everything with a "fine tooth comb" (in Sylvie's words), s...

Figments | Changes

Changes All of these changes  But I'm here to tell you  Don't be afraid There's a bird chirping somewhere in the distance. At least that's what she thinks she hears. Her ears are still ringing from last night. This hotel room is unfamiliar, but it's not like this is the first time that's happened. What was last night's destination? Maybe that one place by that other place? Who gives a crap? She has to get home and get ready for that thing. Home. What a joke. Just like a sunrise  The light of a new day  Step out of the darkness  And let it show you the way Ah, there it is. The sun, her favorite companion. Fuck the sun. Stalker. "Oh! What a beautiful day!" exclaims an old ass white lady wearing a sun dress that looked all too flattering for a woman her age. Meanwhile, here's our subject, looking like she just stumbled out of a bar at 3 a.m. There's no time to think about how she looks now, there's work to be ...

Reflections | Exposed

"You okay?" "I'm fine." How many times a day do you have this conversation with someone a day? How many times does someone else have this conversation with you everyday? Try this: "You okay?" "I'll be fine." Better? Well, that kind of depends on what better is. For one, it is  better on some level, because the other individual in this interaction is acknowledging that there is something that could be made better. [Here I'd like to clarify that every "I'm fine" is not a morose statement in and of themselves. Most people are usually "fine" but sometimes you can tell something else is going on. More on this later]. To come to a conclusion on whether this response is better or not, many factors come into play. Are you close with this person? Do you know whether or not they have the capability to take care of themselves? What I'm trying to get at here is that people don't just randomly ask ...

Reflections | Happy (?) New Year

I know, I know. Cliche titles don't indicate creativity or intellectualism. But sometimes, you gotta rely on cliches to get your point across. Also, sorry for the massive lack of posts. If any of you got access to my dashboard, you'd see about 80+ unfinished posts. So, I haven't abandoned writing, it's just that, most of the time, I realize that the things I write are a) either things general audiences can't handle or b) crap pieces of writing that would make you think I am worse at writing this blog than I actually am. So, I apologize, but you probably don't care that  much. Anyways, it only seems fitting, as a blogger (if you can call me that; haven't quite achieved the title I don't think), that I say a few eloquent (?) words about the year that just passed. This was, quite honestly, the most eventful year of my life. And still, after 2 weeks of nothing but reflection, I don't know whether or not it was mostly for the good or the bad. I c...
